A blast in a coal mine in China's Henan province on 21 June has left at least 47 people dead.

About 75 miners were in the mine when the blast took place at the Xingdong No 2 Mine in Weidong District, Pingdingshan City.

The municipal government of Pingdingshan said 28 miners have been rescued but another 47 did not survive the accident, according to Xinhua news agency.

Officials investigating the blast said the private mine, which has an annual production capacity of 90,000t, has been operating illegally following the expiry of its licence on 6 June.

The cause of the blast has yet to be identified.
