Alcoa and Saudi Arabian Mining Company - Ma’aden have started work on a $10bn aluminium plant at Ras az Zawr in Saudi Arabia.

The integrated industrial complex - which includes a bauxite mine at Ba'aitha, an alumina refinery, an aluminium smelter and a rolling mill at Ras Al-Zour - will be used to construct a smelter and food-grade can sheet rolling mills.

The smelter and rolling mill will begin operations in 2013 with the mine and refinery coming on stream in 2014.
