Mongolia Energy has awarded a $232m contract to Australia's Leighton Holdings to develop and operate its Khushuut coal mine in western Mongolia.

The contract covers all mining activities including the load and haul of waste and coal, drill and blast activities, mine planning, technical support, site camp management and catering services.

The contract is based on a mine plan which ramps up to an initial three million tons of coking coal a year and includes 48.5 million cubic metres of material movement and an anticipated ramp up to five to six million tons or more of coking coal a year.

This is the second contract that Mongolia Energy has awarded to Leighton Asia following last November's contract to provide a mine plan study.
