Xstrata Achieves 9% Growth in Coal Production for Q1

Xstrata has recorded a 9% increase in coal output for the first quarter of 2010 boosted by increased production in Australia of coking coal sold to steelmakers.

Production from Australian coking coal operations increased by 83% while the company’s total coal production for the quarter stood at 21.7 million tons.

Ferrochrome production rose by more than 300% in the quarter.

Xstrata, the world's biggest producer of mined zinc, posted a 15% rise in zinc in concentrate production due to expansions in Australia.

The company’s mined copper production gained 3%, while refined nickel production increased by 8% during the first quarter of 2010, Xstrata said.
