Argentina’s mining-sector representatives and provincial officials in Chubut province are meeting to discuss potential changes in policy that would allow open-pit mining in some areas.

Talks are currently being held on the benefits of lifting the provincial ban on open-pit mining and the use of cyanide in operations for central tableland areas, according to Mining Weekly.

The yet-to-be approved mining policies would be favourable for Pan American Silver's open pit Navidad silver project located in the Chubut province.

A draft document on new mining policies for the province of Chubut is expected to be complete by next month and will be sent to Parliament for approval after the regions selected for open pit mining are delimited.
