Fluor Corporation has won an engineering, procurement and construction management contract from Debswana Diamond Company for the Jwaneng Cut 8 mining project in Botswana.

Fluor completed a feasibility study for the $450m project early last year.

The Jwaneng Cut 8 project involves the expansion of the current open pit diamond mine to facilitate access to the kimberlite ore at a greater depth.

This expansion includes relocating and rebuilding portions of existing surface infrastructure impacted by the pit expansion.

The project will remove 713 million tons of waste between 2010 and 2016 to reveal an additional 75 million tons of kimberlite, extending Jwaneng mine’s lifespan by seven years.

Debswana Diamond Company is a joint venture between the Government of Botswana and De Beers.
