Anglogold Ashanti has temporarily suspended operations at its Iduapriem mine in Ghana following problems at its water storage facility.

Anglogold and the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana have worked to identify an alternative and temporary location for tailings storage which could be operational over the next month.

Anglogold said it plans to open a new tailings storage facility and a water treatment plant by end-2010 or early 2011.

Iduapriem is expected to be closed for a month until the temporary storage facility is operational.

The Iduapriem mine produced 190,000oz of gold in 2009, about 4% of AngloGold Ashanti’s annual global production.
