Water seepage in two shafts has forced Aurora Empowerment Systems to evacuate 800 workers at its East Rand Mines in South Africa.

The South African mining company said 80 million litres of water is normally pumped every day, however, due to above-average water levels, the pumping rate rose to 120 million litres.

The company said in spite of efforts to pump water, the seepage levels are too high for it to be safe for workers.

It is currently investigating ways to stem the floods to ensure safe restart of operations.

In 2009 Aurora acquired East Rand Mines from Pamodzi Gold.
