Dragon Energy has applied for three exploration licenses for 463km2 in Western Australia's mid-west region.

The application areas, which range from 270km to 450km north-west of Perth, contain prospects for banded iron-formation hosted iron ore mineralisation, according to steelguru.com.

Dragon MD Gang Xu said the application areas are located near historical and current gold and base metal mines and emerging and existing iron ore mines.

"They are well placed to take advantage of developing infrastructure in the region," Xu said.

"All application areas have seen previous exploration for gold and base metals but there had been no evaluation of the iron ore potential.

"These applications mark an important step for Dragon in securing a 100% interest in Australian tenements prospective for iron ore and gold mineralisation in an exciting and rapidly developing mineral province."
