Zambian miner Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has appointed South Africa contractor Moolmans to carry out work at its Chingola open pit A as part of the company's drive to achieve annual output of 500,000t by 2011.

KCM said that Moolmans, a subsidiary of The Avenga Group, began operations on 1 September under a performance-based pact to mine 34 million tons of rock in 24 months.

This ore will be treated at the Tail Leaching Plant in Nchanga.

The company, which is the Zambian arm of Vendeta Resources, has aims to increase copper output to 500,000t at 80¢/lb from the current 200,000t by 2011.

KCM operates the Nchanga, Konkola and satellite Fitwaola copper mines.
