An explosion at a coal mine on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has killed at least one and left another 30 miners trapped underground.

Initial reports were that a landslide near the mine had caused the accident but this has now been denied by the head of the government's mining division in West Sumatra.

The coal mine, located in the Sawahlunto district, is thought to be locally owned and produces about 1,500t of coal a month, according to Reuters.
