Bathurst Resources subsidiary Buller Coal has received environmental approvals for its Escarpment mine project in Westport, New Zealand.

Buller Coal gained approval for its 24 resource consents for the project from an independent panel of commissioners.

The firm has agreed to establish and maintain a trust to support and enhance flora and fauna values on the Denniston Plateau, and will also contribute to restoration of historic heritage.

The Escarpment mine project is an open cast coal operation located in the southern part of the Denniston Plateau in the Buller District, and is expected to produce about one million tonnes of hard-coking coal per year.

Buller Coal is expecting to commence the work on the project later in 2011.
