Malaysia Smelting Corporation (MSC) has entered into a confidentiality agreement with the Ministry of Mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), regarding a possible joint venture (JV) to explore and develop tin and related mineral resources.

MSC will also enhance collaborative efforts to improve the effective implementation of the due diligence process and transparency system under the International Tin Supply Initiative scheme.

In April, the minister of mines and delegation from DRC visited MSC's mining and smelting operations in Malaysia and Indonesia and was encouraged by the experience and capability that MSC has to offer, the department said.

MSC’s smelting facility in Butterworth has, for many years, been receiving tin concentrates from DRC, which contributed about 15% of the total metal produced in 2010.
