Xstrata is planning to sustain its Mount Isa mine operations by expanding mining and concentrate production, and phasing out copper smelting and refining by the end of 2016.

The Mount Isa mine is located in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

The firm will develop new mines and expand the existing mining operations at Mount Isa, including the continuation of lead smelting and the expansion of port facilities in Townsville.

Xstrata is currently investing A$463m (US$491.6m) to expand its Mount Isa zinc-lead mining operations with four development projects under construction, and a further A$300m for potential expansions under evaluation.

The firm is also investing A$274m for the expansion of George Fisher mine, and A$113m for the expansion of Black Star Deeps open pit mine.

Xstrata will submit an environmental management plan to the Queensland Government outlining and seeking endorsement for Mount Isa mine's operations.
