The Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) in the US will conduct a pilot programme on mining safety for a Chinese team.

The 15-member team, comprising scientists and engineers, will study the use of optics as safety devices in deep coal mines and implement these measures in China to increase mine safety.

Under the programme, the team will go through an intensive English programme for three months, followed by nine months of science and technology studies at the institute.

Thousands of miners die each year in China, where five million people are estimated to be working in the industry.
