Sierra Leone has ordered the London Mining Company to halt operations at one of its sites following environmental violations.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deputy director Momodu Bah said the company had been ordered to suspend its operations at Lunsar, 160km north of the capital, and to submit a report on the environmental impact of its operations along with pollution-minimising measures.

"The company did not acquire an environmental impact assessment licence before it started mining operations and this was discovered after we conducted an environmental monitoring visit about five days ago to the site," EPA deputy director Momodu Bahof told AFP.

"Sierra Leone is not a banana republic where people can come in, start mining and ignore the law."
