A Federal District Court judge in Colorado, US, has denied an expansion permit for a coalmine on the Navajo reservation.

John Kane has called for a thorough review of the impact of the project on the environment and cultural sites, according to The New York Times.

In the decision issued on 29 October, the judge recommended a permit reassessment by the Interior Department agency.

The agency granted a permit in 2005 for mining an additional 4800 acres at the Navajo Mine operated by BHP Billiton, concluding the project would not affect the environment.
