Commodities trader and miner Glencore has awarded a A$340m ($238.8m) contract to CIMIC Group’s contract mining company Thiess to provide mining services at the Mount Owen coal mine in Australia.

The mine is located near Ravensworth in Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.

It processes up to 15 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal, of which 7.8Mtpa is mined by Thiess from the Mt Owen North Pit.

The 18-month contract extension will extend Thiess’ services at the Mt Owen mine, where it has been providing services since 1994.

Thiess noted that the contract extension will start in July next year.

CIMIC Group CEO Juan Santamaria said: “This award reflects Thiess’ long-term commitment to provide value-add solutions for its clients.”

Under the contract, the CIMIC company will continue to provide mine planning, design and execution, drill and blast, coal mining services and overburden removal at the Mt Owen.

Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said: “For more than 25 years we have delivered industry-leading, specialised mining techniques at Mt Owen, leading to higher resource recovery, increased plant efficiency and reliable material movement for our client.

“Our team looks forward to continuing our long association with Glencore and the Hunter Valley community.”

In July, Thiess secured a five-year contract extension to continue providing mining services at the Lake Vermont coal mine in Queensland.

In September last year, Thiess received a contract extension valued at A$1.3bn ($893m) to provide mining services at Coronado Global Resources’ Curragh mine in Queensland.
