Simpec has secured an A$8m ($5.76m) piping contract for the Chinese company Tianqi Lithium’s Kwinana LHPP1 processing plant in Western Australia.

The Kwinana lithium hydroxide plant is expected to have a total production capacity of 48,000t per annum. According to Tianqi, Kwinana is a two-stage project and construction of the first stage is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

The scope of the new contract includes installation of piping and insulation for the processing plant’s Pyromet area.

Simpec managing director Mark Dimasi said: “It recognises an outstanding effort in not just tendering, but project delivery and places SIMPEC in a great position for future work in this field. I personally would like to thank all the MSP personnel for supporting our team to help deliver such a prestigious project.”

The contract was awarded by Kwiniana project head contractor MSP Engineering. Simpec has previously received a contract from MSP for the Talison Lithium chemical grade plant two (CGP2) project in Greenbushes, Western Australia.

Talison, which operates the Greenbushes lithium mine, is a joint venture between Tianqi and Albemarle.

“With a strong pipeline and increased tendering activity, we are confident that further awards will result early next year.”

In July this year, a $382m investment was approved to increase lithium production at the Greenbushes mine through the construction of a new concentrator plant.

Simpec is an engineering contractor business of WestStar Industrial, an Australian industrial conglomerate.

WestStar Industrial director Bert Mondello said: “This award will no doubt place SIMPEC in a strong position to win further work and larger contracts. With a strong pipeline and increased tendering activity, we are confident that further awards will result early next year.”
