Ericsson and Ambra Solutions have signed a global cooperation agreement to sell and deliver mission-critical private network solutions to global mining customers.

The companies have so far provided more than 90km of network coverage to eight underground and open pit mine sites in Canada.

Ericsson will serve as a radio partner of choice to Ambra to provide 5G-ready network solutions to automate ventilation systems, real-time personnel and vehicle tracking.

Ambra will also provide remote controlling of machinery such as scoop diggers, hauler trucks and drillers.

“The Ericsson products are optimal to deliver the most demanding applications used by the mining 4.0 industry.”

Using 5G-ready Ericsson Radio System, Ambra will be able to simplify network deployments with the ability to replace up to 60 Wi-Fi access points with a single Ericsson solution.

Ambra Solutions CEO Eric L’Heureux said: “The Ericsson products are optimal to deliver the most demanding applications used by the mining 4.0 industry.

“The reliability of Ericsson products enables more predictable, secure and lower-cost connectivity, and mining companies want to use a reliable product that is available worldwide.”

Ambra’s mining customers can deploy mission-critical private LTE to enable digitalisation of mining-related tasks for open pit or underground mines.

Ericsson North America Customer Unit Emerging Business head Shannon Lucas said: “The global mining industry has been vulnerable to challenges of energy consumption, equipment loss and human safety.

“We have designed an easy-to-use cellular connectivity solution to address these issues and deliver efficiency through digital transformation, while creating a path to 5G.”

Last year, Ericsson and Ambra partnered to deliver underground LTE network for the Agnico Eagle mining complex, LaRonde, in Abitibi, Quebec, Canada.
