WestStar Industrial’s engineering contractor business Alltype Engineering has won a contract to deliver an iron ore mining plant at Rio Tinto’s Koodaideri mine project in Western Australia (WA).

The A$6m ($4.4m) contract has been awarded by construction company Laing O’Rourke.

Located 35km northwest of the Yandicoogina mine in the East Pilbara mining region of WA, the Koodaideri mine is an open-cut project that is being developed by Rio Tinto.

Under the contract, Alltype Engineering will complete the phase 1 structural, mechanical and piping (SMP) package for the mine project.

Other works to be performed by Alltype Engineering include procurement, fabrication, surface protection, pre-assembly as well as modularisation.

Alltype Engineering managing director Kelvin Andrijich said: “Alltype Engineering undertook a significant strategic shift in direction in 2017, focusing on multidiscipline construction solutions, technology partnerships with OEMs and leveraging off the well-established industry exposure developed over 35 years of operation.

“This strategy continues to unfold with our established local fabrication capability and by building upon successive projects delivered of increasing scale and complexity with existing and new clients.

“The support of our new owner WestStar Industrial allows the group to execute larger contracts previously constrained by working capital, as well as start to expand the operational footprint to the east coast of Australia where there is further market opportunity for this offering.”

Alltype Engineering will “substantially pre-assemble and modularise” the structural steel elements and other mechanical equipment at its naval base facility.

In August last year, NRW Holdings won a contract worth approximately A$95m ($63.83m) from Rio Tinto for its Koodaideri mine project.
