Ten biggest producing surface mines in the Former Soviet Union in 2021

Here are the ten largest surface mining projects by production in the Former Soviet Union in 2021, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Kajaran Mine

The Kajaran Mine is a copper mining project in Syunik, Armenia. The greenfield project is owned by CRONIMET Mining. The mine produced an estimated 60.4Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 163 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021.

2. Gusevogorskoye Mine

The Gusevogorskoye Mine is an iron ore mine owned by Evraz Plc. Located in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 58.9Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 9.9 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2042.

3. Bogatyr Komir Mine

Located in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, the Bogatyr Komir Mine is a coal mining project owned by Samruk-Energy.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 56Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 44.6 million tonnes of coal in the same year.

4. Aktogay Project

The Aktogay Project is a copper mine located in East Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan. Owned by KAZ Minerals PLC, the greenfield project produced an estimated 54.9Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 136.4 thousand tonnes of copper in 2021. The Aktogay Project will operate until 2045.

5. Lebedinsky GOK Mine

Owned by Metalloinvest MC, the Lebedinsky GOK Mine is an iron ore mine situated in Belgorod Oblast, Russia.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 51.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 22.1 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021.

6. Mikhailovsky GOK Mine

The Mikhailovsky GOK Mine is an iron ore mining project in Kursk Oblast, Russia. The greenfield project is owned by Metalloinvest MC. The mine produced an estimated 49.3Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 18.7 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021.

7. Ingulets GOK Mine

The Ingulets GOK Mine is an iron ore mine owned by Metinvest. Located in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, the brownfield mine produced approximately 42.2Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 12.7 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The expected mine closure date is 2080.

8. Northern GOK Mine

Located in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, the Northern GOK Mine is an iron ore mining project owned by Metinvest.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 39.6Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 12.5 million tonnes of iron ore in the same year.

9. Karelsky Okatysh Complex

The Karelsky Okatysh Complex is an iron ore mine located in Republic of Karelia, Russia. Owned by Severstal, the greenfield project produced an estimated 34.8Mt of ROM in 2021.

The mine had an estimated production of 11 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021. The Karelsky Okatysh Complex will operate until 2046.

10. Poltava Mine

Owned by Ferrexpo Plc, the Poltava Mine is an iron ore mine situated in Poltava, Ukraine. The mine is expected to operate until 2040.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 33.6Mt of ROM in 2021. It had an estimated production of 21.6 million tonnes of iron ore in 2021.
