Ten biggest producing surface mines in the Former Soviet Union in 2020

Here are the ten largest surface mining projects by production in the Former Soviet Union in 2020, according to GlobalData’s mining database.

1. Kajaran Mine

The Kajaran Mine is a copper mining project in Syunik, Armenia. The greenfield project is owned by CRONIMET Mining. The mine produced an estimated 60.753Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 164.032 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

2. Gusevogorskoye Mine

The Gusevogorskoye Mine is an iron ore mine owned by Evraz Plc. Located in Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 59.119Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 10.13 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2042.

3. Bogatyr Komir Mine

Located in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, the Bogatyr Komir Mine is a coal mining project owned by Samruk-Energy.

The greenfield mine produced an estimated 57.024Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 43.338 mtpa of coal in the same year.

4. Ingulets GOK Mine

The Ingulets GOK Mine is an iron ore mine located in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine. Owned by Metinvest, the brownfield project produced an estimated 42.578Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 12.858 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The Ingulets GOK Mine will operate until 2080.

5. Northern GOK Mine

Owned by Metinvest, the Northern GOK Mine is an iron ore mine situated in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.

6. Aktogay Project

The Aktogay Project is a copper mining project in East Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan. The greenfield project is owned by KAZ Minerals PLC and is due to operate until 2044. The mine produced an estimated 39.348Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 135.2 thousand tonnes of copper in 2020.

7. Karelsky Okatysh Complex

The Karelsky Okatysh Complex is an iron ore mine owned by Severstal. Located in Republic of Karelia, Russia, the greenfield mine produced approximately 34.948Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 10.9 mtpa of iron ore in 2020. The expected mine closure date is 2046.

8. Poltava Mine

Located in Poltava, Ukraine, the Poltava Mine is an iron ore mining project owned by Ferrexpo Plc. The mine is expected to operate until 2040.

The brownfield mine produced an estimated 33.674Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 21.652 mtpa of iron ore in the same year.

9. Lebedinsky GOK Mine

The Lebedinsky GOK Mine is an iron ore mine located in Belgorod Oblast, Russia. Owned by Metalloinvest MC, the greenfield project produced an estimated 33.181Mt of ROM in 2020.

The mine had an estimated production of 21.9 mtpa of iron ore in 2020.

10. The Borodinsky Strip Mine

Owned by Siberian Coal Energy, the The Borodinsky Strip Mine is a coal mine situated in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia.

The ROM production at the mine produced was approximately 29.741Mt of ROM in 2020. It had an estimated production of 20.343 mtpa of coal in 2020.
