Ancient Egypt: a land of the grandest designs and pharaohs dripping with gold, left unexplored since Roman times. With only one operating gold mine in the country, experts believe billions of dollars’ of minerals are still awaiting discovery. Hoping to prove this true, Canadian mining company Alexander Nubia is using Egypt’s antiquated gold mines as a guide to unearthing vast deposits. We hear of the miner’s plans and ask why these resources have been untapped for centuries.

Still with gold, we visit SOTRAMI – one of only six Fairtrade mines in the world – which sits deep in the Peruvian desert. We find out how Fairmined certification is supporting responsible economic growth, and how to emulate this success.

Also, we speak to explorers in the Atlantic Ocean about the potential of seafloor mining, hear how Chilean Wealth Minerals is staking a claim on the lithium market, ask if it’s time to re-assess the extent of CO2 emissions from wastewater, and consider the impact on the sector of Caterpillar’s exit from underground mining equipment.

Elsewhere, we find out about developments in chemical extraction techniques and how they’re being used to reclaim the precious metals in disgarded electronics.
