With regard to diesel underground emissions, there are some important maintenance aspects that are almost never addressed. For example, what is done to specifically reduce emission generating deposits in the crankcase, combustion chambers, around exhaust ports and within turbochargers? The answer is generally, nothing.
Scheduled preventative maintenance programmes typically cannot address the progressive build-up of engine deposits that occur with increasing service life. These deposits generate increased underground emissions, and represent a missed opportunity to lower diesel particulate emissions (DPE’s), in particular.
Factors which contribute to these deposits include extended periods of idling, light engine loadings, low rpm work and cool operating temperatures. Mind you, these factors are often difficult to avoid in underground operations.
Cost Effective Maintenance offers a means of economically removing these unaddressed deposits and then maintaining clean condition ongoing, and importantly, with minimal downtime and low cost. Two important products in their armoury include the FTC Decarbonizer and Flushing Oil Concentrate.
Minimising deposits also results in significantly reduced wear, so engines are maintained in better shape to control emissions for the long term.
Let’s consider the following problem areas:
- Injector deposits result in poor injector spray patterns and fuel metering, compromising combustion efficiency
- Piston ring deposits. Accumulation of carbonaceous deposits in ring grooves causes loss of compression and oil control and deteriorated diesel combustion
- Cylinder glaze is commonly due to excessive idling, cooler operating temperature and light engine loadings. Excessive crankcase pressure and smoke can result
- Combustion chamber carbon reduces the free space in the combustion chamber, adversely affecting air/fuel ratios and engine volumetric efficiency
- Exhaust valve & port carbon. Build-up here doesn’t allow the engine to breathe efficiently, upsetting combustion efficiency
- Turbocharger carbon reduces the amount of air pumped by the turbo and increases turbo lag, creating increased emissions
Use of the flushing oil concentrate will dissolve and suspend sludge as well as hard baked-on carbon from all oil wetted components. It can be included with the normal engine service to remove these contaminants from the system.
