Real-Time Mineral Analysers for the Mining Industry

Since 1981, more than 1,000 analysers have been sold in over 55 countries and are used in coal, cement, power and minerals industries, which include iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead, phosphate rock, bauxite and lithium.

Through ongoing research and development, Scantech produces industry-leading systems featuring robust design and optimal configurations to ensure a safe, high-quality, reliable performance with low-maintenance requirements. All systems are non-contact with the conveyed flows and contain no wear components that require plant downtime to replace.

Mineral elemental and moisture analysis solutions

Scantech has been supplying the GEOSCAN-M elemental analyser technology to the minerals industry for more than 15 years.

The large number of successful installations across the minerals sector has made Scantech the leading global supplier of the GEOSCAN-M elemental and through-belt moisture (TBM) moisture analyser technologies. We offer high-specification analysers designed to meet adverse conditions in environments where resources are mined and processed from the mine to the smelter.

GEOSCAN-M utilises prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA), a proven technique for real-time elemental measurement through conveyed flows. It uses the most advanced components and software to maximise measurement performance. The system does not require consistent flow rates or long measurement times to produce continually accurate results. A detector array consisting of multiple, advanced, bismuth germanium oxide detectors is combined with a matched neutron source to optimise measurement efficiency.

Measurements are made over increments between 30s and 5min, but are typically 2min. High accuracy of multiple elements over these times allows the GEOSCAN-M to be used very effectively in bulk ore diversion (bulk sorting).

Other applications may include blending control, additive management, ore reconciliation, and feed forward control for downstream processing.

Scantech’s TBM microwave analyser has many proven applications in multiple industries, and its integration with the GEOSCAN-M allows accurate dry weight percentage reporting of elemental measurement results.

Elemental analysis for stockpile and raw mix for cement applications

GEOSCAN-C has been successfully used in cement plant applications for limestone stockpile quality control and raw mix blending control for decades. Hundreds of analysers have been installed worldwide to major cement companies, with Scantech’s robust, non-contact design being favoured for demanding operating conditions.

GEOSCAN-C Scantech has also successfully applied its BLENDSCAN blending software to plants requiring automated control. Stockpile applications allow the bulk of the limestone homogenisation to be done after quarrying so that corrections for chemical composition at the raw mill stage are minimised and relatively expensive additives are conserved when added to the raw mix.

Scantech promotes dynamic calibration processes to ensure the plant operating conditions are effectively incorporated into the analyser calibration, which optimises measurement performance and plant outcomes. The vastly improved control over quality variation using real-time analysers relative to the use of sampling and laboratory analysis for plant control has been a major development for the continuous improvement of cement plant performances worldwide.

Ash analysers for the coal industry

Scantech commercialised the first COALSCAN analysers in the early 1980s for real-time ash analysis of conveyed coal.

Analysers were adopted worldwide and in excess of 600 units have been installed and become an essential component for mining, wash plant and power station real-time control over ash quality. The range was extended to include moisture analysis, ash using natural gamma, and elemental analysis in the 1990s.

COALSCAN became the benchmark for real-time ash analysis and many of the initial units installed in the 1980s are still operational today.

Scantech has continuously improved the designs and performance of the COALSCAN range and is making further developments for future improvements. While the extent of coal usage appears to have peaked, analysers incorporating the most advanced technologies are needed to replace outdated systems.

Scantech’s analysers are used at coal mines, wash plants and coal-fired power stations for ash and moisture management, as well as elemental content for sulphur, calcium, iron and calculated parameters such as calorific value (also known as heating value or energy value). Some of these are used for bulk sorting or blending coal to boilers to ensure emission levels are well controlled.

Analyser maintenance, service and support

Scantech’s ongoing service and support are performed by qualified and certified engineers who manage the ongoing performance of the analysers and help clients improve the benefits to site operations.

We collaborate with suppliers, universities, customers and research organisations to develop improved solutions, as well as refine product designs and components.

While customised solutions already provide significant advantages to clients, further developments over time can be retrofitted to existing installations for improved reliability or enhanced performance.

Scantech offers flexible product support packages and radiation services to facilitate analyser management.

Additional installation and design services

Scantech has the expertise to assist, supervise, design and supply installation services, as well as other equipment generally needed to ensure successful analyser performance.

This includes ploughs, weather protection covers, belt-weighing solutions, access platforms, support frames, and modifications to existing plants.
