Atlas Copco Rock Drills Surface Drilling Equipment for Mines
Atlas Copco develops, manufactures and markets rock drilling equipment, mobile crushers and screeners for various applications in civil engineering, quarries and open pit mines worldwide. With our headquarters and main production centre in Örebro, Sweden, we focus strongly on innovative product design and after-market support systems, which give added customer value.
Rock drilling surface crawlers
Atlas Copco’s range of surface crawlers raises the quality of rock drilling to a new level. The lowest cost per tonne of rock produced comes from the higher productivity, straighter holes and the better overall economy designed into the range. These surface crawlers include several models that are ideally suited for bench drilling.
Choose between hydraulic top-hammer, Atlas Copco’s patented COPROD system, or down-the-hole (DTH) drilling methods. The unique SmartRig will help you to drill smarter holes with high shift capacity, low energy consumption and innovative modules that improve productivity. Atlas Copco’s range of crawlers is setting new standards for stability, maneuverability and safety in quarries and contracting work.
Tophammer drilling method
The classic tophammer method is renowned for high penetration rates in good drilling conditions and Atlas Copco is developing the method continuously. Exhaustive research into how impact energy can be transmitted into the drill bit in the most efficient way, with least possible stress, has resulted in a new generation of rock drills.
Development has been focused on the key component in the rock drill – the piston. The piston length, mass, and geometry have resulted in even faster penetration. The effect is that more rock is crushed with each blow from the piston.
Moreover, a double-damping system reduces the load on components leading to long service life and reduced drill steel wear. In other words, the positive results of faster drilling are not counteracted by higher drill steel costs. An extractor unit is also available for poor rock conditions.
Coprod drilling system
The coprod system combines the speed of tophammer drilling with the precision and long service life of the down-the-hole method. Inside each rigid, threaded tube section is an impact rod which is furnished with stop lugs to hold it in place inside the tube.
The so-called coprod sections are joined together via the other tubes. Since the other tubes transmit rotation torque and feed force only, the stress to the threads is minimal and life length is very long. All negative effects of transmitting the impact energy through the threads are eliminated entirely. The result is high-impact power with minimal wear.
Since the outer tubes are smooth and flush along the entire length of the drillstring, it is almost impossible for jamming to occur. Practical experience with coprod has been exceptionally good. The method gives good overall economy, particularly in large-scale production drilling and drilling in broken rock or other demanding rock conditions.
Down-the-hole (DTH) drilling method
Drills using the DTH method are easy to operate and maintain. The method offers a reliable way to drill hard to soft, solid to fissured or fracture rock, and features a hammer piston, which strikes the drill bit with virtually no power loss.
Shallow, deep or long holes are drilled with barely any change in capacity and hammer casing and stiff drill tubes offer good guidance for the hammer and drill bit, minimising in-hole deviation. Thus, blasting patterns and use of explosives can be optimised, increasing the yield of rock at a reduced cost per meter or footage drilled. The optimized annulus between the drill tubes and the hole wall ensures efficient hole cleaning under most rock conditions, including long or deep holes or holes filled with water.
Apart from blasthole drilling, the DTH method is widely used for water well drilling, shallow gas and oil wells, and for geothermal wells. It is also developed for sampling using the reverse circulation technique (RC drilling).
