Thiess wins $347m contract at Gunung Bara Utama coal mine, Indonesia


CIMIC Group's unit Thiess has secured a new A$437m ($347m) contract at Gunung Bara Utama (GBU) coal mine in the West Kurai region, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. 

Under the contract, the company will start delivering total mining solutions beginning this year, which will continue until 2024. 

CIMIC Group CEO Adolfo Valderas said: "This new contract in Indonesia demonstrates how Thiess is continuing to expand mining operations by establishing valuable partnerships with our mining clients." 

CIMIC Group Executive Mining and Mineral Processing and Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson said that the company’s partnership with GBU will deliver on its strategic and operational objectives and also leverage its mining solutions in the region.

Thompson added: "Our mining business is in a strong position, which is reinforced by this new contract."

Separately, Thiess has secured a contract extension at Harum Energy’s Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ) coal mine in East Kalimantan.

With further revenues of A$300m ($238m), the contract extension will run until March 2021 and extend CIMIC’s Group’s 13-year mine development and operations at the site.

The bituminous thermal coal mine MSJ is located 25km north of Samarinda on the north side of the Mahakam River.

The mine operates under a Generation III Coal Contract of Work (CCoW), which is set to expire in 2034.
