ABB secures mine hoist order in Sweden
Power and automation technology group ABB has secured a $32m contract from Swedish mining company LKAB, to update four mine hoists at its Kiruna iron ore mine.
The contract includes the delivery of mechanical equipment and the upgrade of electrical control and drives for four mine hoists, as well as related engineering services.
The company will supply the pulley, hoist shaft, bearing and bearing houses, hydraulic brake system, skips, dumping curves, measuring and ore loading flasks for each of the four hoists, and modernisation of the existing control and drive systems.
ABB head of process automation division Veli-Matti Reinikkala said the company secured the order because of its deep industry knowledge, dependable mine hoist solutions, and ongoing working relationship with LKAB.
"Our cutting-edge technology maximises efficiency and safety of the mine hoist system, ensuring successful operation over the lifetime of the mine," said Reinikkala.
Three revamped hoists, scheduled for operation in 2014, with a fourth hoist scheduled for 2017, are expected to carry ore from a depth of 1,365m, thereby increasing the mine production by 17% from 30 to 35 million tonnes.
