ABB secures mine hoist order from Xstrata Zinc
Power and automation technology group ABB has secured a $24m contract from Xstrata Zinc to design, supply and commission ore hoisting equipment for its George Fisher Mine (GFM) located in Queensland, Australia.
The ground-mounted friction hoist is expected to carry ore from a depth of 1,135m, thereby increasing the mine production by 30% within the next two years.
GFM has an estimated 600Mt of ore and 36Mt of contained zinc metal.
The hoist system is powered by ABB's ACS 6000 medium voltage drive system and a 9,000kW synchronous motor.
The company will also supply bottom dump ore skips with inspection platforms, rope deflection sheaves and a skip dumping system, while ABB's 800xA AC800M industrial controller will manage and control the entire mine hoisting system.
Delivery of the equipment is scheduled to be complete in 2013.
