Illegal Miners Loot Freeport Congo Mine
Illegal miners have allegedly damaged trucks and stolen copper from the $2bn Tenke Fungurume mine owned by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Congo's provincial Interior Minister Jean-Marie Dikanga said illegal miners squatting in Tenke Fungurume blocked the route, vandalised their offices, stole computers and burned three trucks, looting the copper cathodes in one of them, reports Reuters.
Freeport-McMoRan said the incident did not affect the mine's operations.
Illegal mining is rampant in the country, with around one million people believed to be involved in the activity.
