The Slovakian Parliament is anticipating a petition signed by more than 100,000 Slovak citizens who are against uranium mining.
Greenpeace spokesperson Lucia Szabová told the TASR newswire that they will present the petition to the Parliament’s December session, which requires more than 100,000 signatures for it to be discussed.
Green activists say they believe uranium mining endangers the Slovakian people who could be exposed to large quantities of radioactive material.
The petition was filed in September by Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth and Sozna and Brectan civic associations.
Greenpeace director in Slovakia Juraj Rizman said the civic initiative is the biggest environmental petition to be submitted in the history of Slovakia.
The petition is also the first instance where local environmental organisations are in negotiations with parliament on these issues, Rizman said.
In recent years, an increasing number of mining companies have been searching for uranium ore within Slovakia.
