BHP Releases Plans for Olympic Dam Expansion

BHP Billiton has released draft plans for the expansion of Australia’s largest underground mine, producing copper and uranium, following five years at the drawing board.

The Olympic Dam mine in South Australia will undergo an elaborate five-stage expansion plan if BHP’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement is approved. The plan includes the creation of a huge open cut pit and expanding mineral processing facilities that increase ore production by six times.

After a 14-week public exhibition, BHP Billiton will release a supplementary impact statement to respond to concerns raised by the public submission. The draft plan will then be reviewed by the Federal Government and governments of South Australia and Northern Territory.

BHP Billiton will provide estimated costs if the project is approved for execution by the company board.
