BHP Manganese Mines Given Helping Hand

20 May 2008

Diesel generators are being imported from Australia to BHP Billiton's Hotazel manganese mines in South Africa to keep operations going should power outages occur.

Talking to Mining Weekly Online, BHP manganese President Peter Beaven says the generators will keep critical sections in operation following severe power shortages.

Power supply problems across South Africa have slowed operations since the start of the year, with some not operating to full capacity.

About three million tonnes of manganese ore is produced a year at the company's Hotazel mines, two million of which is exported.
