Peru Miners Poised to Strike Next Week

07 May 2008 11:19

Peruvian miners are set to strike next week to demand better labour benefits, the head of the country's biggest federation of mining unions has announced.

According to federation leader Luis Castillo, 33 unions are supporting the strike set to go ahead on 12 May, writes Reuters.

The strikes aim to pressure the government to lift caps on profits that mining companies share with workers, clampdown on outsourcing by companies and give workers rights to enrol in state-run pensions.

Unions expected to strike include those at Southern Copper, Antamina, Doe Run Peru, Shougang Hierro Peru and Milpo among others.

Peru is the world's leading silver producer.
