Anglo American Granted South African Mining Rights

30 April 2008 11:46

South Africa's Department of Minerals and Energy has granted Anglo American new order mining rights for all its South African operations.

The decision relates to the conversion of mineral rights in Anglo American's South African coal, ferrous and base metals and platinum businesses.

"The granting of conversions to subsidiaries of South Africa's largest mining company, Anglo American, is a mark of progress for the country's transformation," says Minister of Minerals and Energy Buyelwa Sonjica.

Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll welcomes the move, which she says contributes to the country’s "economic prosperity".

"This significant achievement provides an ever stronger platform for our US$5bn of growth projects and 120,000 employees and contractors in South Africa," says Carroll.

The applications for conversion of mineral rights associated with Anglo Platinum's 50:50 joint ventures, with Royal Bafokeng Resources and the African Rainbow Minerals, are still being processed based on submissions and representations by stakeholders, Anglo adds.
