Codelco Mines Closed Over Workers Dispute

22 April 2008 14:36

Chile's copper giant Codelco has halted operations at three of its mining divisions due to a violent six-day strike by mine workers over pay and benefits.

One of the mine units, El Teniente, shut down for a day after a Codelco employee was hit and injured by a metal object, writes Bloomberg.

The Andina and Salvador mines closed when the strike began last week while the company's biggest mine Norte remains in operation.

The Confederation of Copper Workers representing contract workers seeking better pay have begun talks with the government to resolve the dispute.
