Inuit's Vote to Ban Canada Uranium Mining

10 April 2008

Members of the Nunatsiavut Assembly representing the Labrador Inuit have voted to ban uranium mining in northern Labrador's Central Mineral Belt in Canada.

The narrowly split vote of the Nunatsiavut Assembly, which represents the area's 5,000 Inuit population, has secured a ban on mining activity for three years.

Mining exploration will still be permitted but the move is set to alarm local junior explorers.

Labrador's Inuit manage a 72,520km² land claim settlement in northern Labrador, 15,800km² of which is fully owned by the Inuit people.
