Xstrata Mine Pollution Levels Condemned

02 April 2008

Xstrata's Mount Isa Mines has been named one of Australia's most polluting businesses, according to the country's National Pollutant Inventory.

The inventory identified high levels of sulphur dioxide, lead, copper, zinc and cadmium at the mine's facilities in northwest Queensland.

But the Anglo-Swiss miner says it has reduced emissions in recent years and currently has a monitoring programme in place at Mount Isa to ensure industrial emissions are at safe levels.

The Mayor of Mount Isa says he is unaware of any health concerns in the city from industrial pollution, writes ABC News.
