China to Restore Production at Coal Mines

06 March 2008 15:19

China's State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) has launched an initiative to restore production at 10,000 small coal mines after severe winter weather.

SAWS told official news agency Xinhua more than 2,700 coal mines saw production halted by power failures caused by heavy snow in the central and southern provinces of Hunan, Jiangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou.

More than 13,200 coal mines are scheduled to resume production following maintenance work after last month's Spring Festival holiday period.

During the holiday period, coal production remained at 64 percent of capacity nationwide and 96.7 percent of large state-owned mines remained in production.
