The world's largest aluminium and alumina producer UC Rusal, is launching the disused Alscon smelter in Nigeria, expected to reach full capacity of 197,000t a year by 2010.
The investment in the smelter's modernisation, including dredging of the nearby Imo River, will amount to approximately $300m, according to the company.
UC Rusal acquired a majority stake in Alscon last year, beginning a large-scale modernisation programme to restore operation after eight years, including upgrading the existing production technology.
