Power Restored to South African Mines

30 January 2008

South African mines are expected to return to normal by the end of the week, after 80 percent of their power was restored today following severe power shortages, according to African news reports.

Last week, power utility Eskom announced it could not guarantee power, halting production at mines across the country on Friday.

Companies including Gold Fields, Impala Platinum and AngloGold Ashanti say they will ramp up to normal production once they have 90 percent power, writes allafrica.com.

Eskom also says it needs 15 million tonnes of additional coal over the next three months including 5.4 million tonnes immediately, according to the South African Chamber of Mines.
