Power Shortages Hit Chinese Mines

30 January 2008

Power shortages in China, combined with severe snow conditions, have combined to reduce production of minerals and metals in some Chinese provinces, writes Reuters.

The Shanxi Government has asked all aluminium smelters with a total capacity of 1.04 million tonnes of annual capacity to cut production by at least a third.

China's top stainless steel mill, Taigang, has cut 10-20 percent of its three million tonnes of annual capacity over the past two weeks, according to the news agency.

More than 280,000t of annual lead capacity, 350,000t of zinc and nearly 30,000t of antimony capacity have been shut while production of aluminium, copper, lead, zinc, antimony, ferroalloys and stainless steel has been reduced across some provinces.
