South Africa Mines Struggle After Blackouts

28 January 2008

South African mining companies resumed underground maintenance work yesterday, following the widespread power crisis that hit the country's mines last Friday.

Mineral extraction is still not permitted following weekend talks between mining officials who say there will be no production for a few more days, writes Reuters.

The halt to production has sent prices of the metals soaring, weakening the rand.

Over the past few weeks, South African homes and businesses have experienced daily blackouts as national utility Eskom has struggled to meet electricity demands.
