The US state of Utah is to get a state mine safety office, the Utah Mine Safety Commission has announced.
The commission has published a list of recommendations to improve mine safety in the state following the collapse of the Crandall Canyon Mine last August, which killed six miners and three rescuers.
The list includes establishing a limited state mine safety office to partner with US federal regulations.
Other measures include a mine safety ombudsman alert system, enabling coal miners to confidentially relay safety concerns, and upgrading seismic monitoring systems to detect potential problems in the area.
The commission, which was set up in September 2007, heard testimonies from mine operators and coal miners in the area.
