Cyclone Threat Shuts Down Australian Uranium Mine

04 January 2008

Uranium mining company Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) has stopped mining operations at its Ranger mine in the Northern Territory as Tropical Cyclone Helen threatens the region.

ERA says mining operations have been halted in preparation for the cyclone but that large stockpiles will ensure the mine does not fall behind in production.

The category one cyclone is located about 300km southwest of Darwin and is expected to cross the coast tonight, according to news agency AAP.

Other mining companies with operations in the area are watching the progress of the storm, according to local media reports.
