WA Miners Rescued

24 October 2007

Fifty four miners trapped underground at the Kanowna Belle gold mine in Western Australia have been rescued, mine-owner Barrick Gold Corporation says.

The fire, which broke out inside a 755 caterpillar truck engine at about 9.15am (GMT) today, left an underground cavity covered in smoke, forcing the miners to wait in refuge chambers.

The miners were bought to the surface by a site mine rescue team cooperating with regional assistance.
