Fire Traps Miners at WA Mine

24 October 2007

A fire at the Kanowna Belle gold mine in Western Australia has left 54 miners trapped underground.

The fire, which broke out inside a 755 caterpillar truck engine at about 9.15am, left an underground cavity covered in smoke, leaving the miners to take to safety in refuge chambers until their rescue.

Mine-owner Barrick Gold Corporation says 37 miners have already been rescued and so far no injuries are reported.

The site mine rescue team, together with regional assistance are currently in the process of bringing the miners to the surface.
