Queensland Rail (QR) is to increase its fleet of freight trains with new electric locomotives to expand the Goonyella Coal Systems network.
QR has awarded a AUD$170m contract to German train manufacturer Siemens Transportation Systems for the 25 Class 3800 electric locomotives which it says will provide increased haulage capacity through increased payload.
The heavy haul locomotives will be built in Germany where they will be delivered over 12 months starting at the end of 2009.
