EU Approve Rio Alcan Takeover

03 October 2007

EU competition regulators have given Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto the go-ahead to take over Canada's Alcan to become the world's largest producer of aluminium and bauxite.

EU regulators approved the $38.1bn deal, saying it would not hinder competition in the European market.

Rio Tinto hopes to complete the takeover by the end of the year.
